10 simple tips for a strong body and soul

Share

I spend a great deal of time talking to you about your financial health. That’s certainly important, but don’t neglect your body and your mind! You can’t be at your business best if you ignore your personal health. Worst case scenario, becoming a billionaire will all be for nothing if you can’t enjoy it!

Here are my top 10 tips to help you to be physically and emotionally healthy, happy and in control of your life:

  1. Get that blood pumping! Try to exercise at least one hour a day, at least a few times a week. While exercise such as cycling, swimming, or other traditional sports activity is great for improving your cardiovascular fitness, even mild exercise like stretching, yoga, or walking is beneficial for your physical and mental health if practiced regularly.
  2. You are what you eat. Try to eat healthy foods whenever possible – it really makes a difference.  Healthy foods include fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, low fat dairy products, etc. Fast food is OK on occasion, but it shouldn’t be a regular part of your diet.
  3. Eat more often! Doing so can help satisfy your appetite, which may help prevent overeating later in the day.  Despite what those diet pill ads claim, successful weight management really comes down to eating an appropriate number of calories and being physically active on a regular basis.
  4. Stay hydrated for health. Keep a bottle of water with you throughout the day. A good rule of thumb: drink a half an ounce of water a day for every pound you weigh. So, if you weigh 150 pounds, try to drink at least 75 ounces of water each day. Avoid drinking soft drinks and other drinks loaded with sugar, though – don’t mistake thirst for hunger.
  5. Take your vitamins. If you’re not taking a multivitamin, you should. A daily supplement can lessen infections and may reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis and macular degeneration. You could also have more energy as a result.
  6. Sleep for success! Studies show that the average adult needs 7-8 hours sleep per night.  Getting plenty of sleep is a great way to keep your immune system healthy, and getting enough rest helps to curb feelings of tiredness, depression and irritability.
  7. Share the love. I think two of the most important words in the English language are “thank you.”  Don’t hesitate to feel and express gratitude. Saying “thanks” to those around you is priceless because otherwise they will assume you don’t value them. Giving thanks is also important on a personal level – it helps us to appreciate what we have, and it guides us in our own pursuit of happiness.
  8. Be a little “selfish” every day. Taking time for yourself means doing something purely for you, that you enjoy and will help you relax. If you have a busy schedule, try to dedicate at least 15 minutes a day towards personal time for you and you alone.
  9. Get a furry (or feathered or finned) friend. Studies have shown that pets are good for your health! Owning a pet can significantly improve overall health and reduce risk of disease. The benefits of pet ownership are real – physically, mentally and psychosocially. We even have a few employees that bring their pets to work. One dog, Peanut, is our unofficial director of security here at Dalbey Education.
  10. Have goals, will travel! When you set goals for yourself, you put yourself in control – it gives you a sense of purpose and direction. Research has shown that goal setting enhances performance in all areas of life. By setting goals, you are able to move beyond your self-doubts, overcome your fears and “think successful.” Goal setting leads directly to being successful, and this in turn raises your self-esteem and confidence.

Give these simple suggestions a try, and I’ll bet that you’ll feel better and more in control of your life. Don’t do it for me – do it for you.

Warmly,
Russ

In response to Russ on eating good, I am disabled from brain cancer. I have found out that the body can take care of itself if given the nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals & herbs – natural foods from the earth. I am now taking a juice from a fruit that comes out of the rain forest of SE Asia called mangosteen – check it out on the web, you will be glad you did.

Being in the health care field, I see exactly what you are saying. Having money is good, but having your health and enjoying what you have is even better.
