Marathon Kids: building success and fitness for life
As some of you might know, I have been a competitive cyclist all of my life. I’ve been fortunate enough to have traveled the world with the U.S. Olympic cycling team. And there are few things in life that have meant more to me than cycling. Even now, cycling is an enormous part of my every day life.
For me, the sport of cycling – and anything athletic, really – is a metaphor for success. It’s about setting goals, figuring out how to hit them, and simply doing it. Here’s the best part: being successful in sports is FUN.
Physical health and exercise are a big part of successful living. And I believe that the earlier this habit of enjoying activity is created, the better.
I came across a program the other day called Marathon Kids. It’s a free, endurance-building program for kids in kindergarten through fifth grade in Texas and Los Angeles. Marathon Kids teaches children about health, nutrition and setting goals, and competition through running, walking, nutrition, and more. Its mission is to “build a joyful community” by encouraging health, wellness and success.
Some of these little kids are literally training to complete a marathon, all 26-plus miles! Sometimes they do it a quarter-mile at a time, but the point is they are doing it: setting goals, making it happen, and building healthy habits and self esteem for life along the way.
What a great idea!
