The formula for happiness: no magic required
In my long career, I’ve seen over and over that many people seem to be seeking some magic trick… a mysterious, only-known-by-a-few secret to live the perfect life and make your dreams come true. The truth is that there is no magic for this. There is no secret password to whisper to open the gates to happiness.
But, there is a formula. And, I’m happy to say that the formula – the “magic trick,” if you want to call it that – to living a successful life is as simple as one, two, three.
Let me explain. To my way of thinking, there are three things that make life worth living: good health, happy and fulfilling relationships, and prosperity. And, there are three things that will help you achieve success in each of these areas: the setting of realistic but challenging goals, the willingness to work hard, and the support of a great mentor or qualified coach.
Good health, rewarding relationships, and prosperity mean different things to different people. First, define what these things mean to you, in your personal and professional life. Then, you can move towards making your ideal life reality.
Goals are the easy part. They are sometimes as basic and straightforward as “I will lower my cholesterol by 30 points,” or “I want build a stronger, more loving connection with my spouse,” or “I will earn enough this year to buy a house.”
The working-hard part can sometimes be a challenge. But, the hard part isn’t really in the “work” – it’s in the mindset. If you have your eyes on the prize – and you’ve determined your day-to-day goals that will continually move you closer to the “top of the mountain” – hard work doesn’t seem quite so daunting.
You want to lose weight? Okay.
You want to spend more quality time with your partner? Great.
You want to earn more money this year than last year? Fantastic.
Now make a plan to achieve those goals. What’s it going to take? What do you need to do to get there? Whether it’s talking to a nutritionist to help set up a new diet program, or it’s looking into a class or activity you and your partner can share together, or it’s researching new marketing options to grow your client base, you have to have a plan.
And, it’s critical to have support. Lots of people find the motivation they need to get to the gym every morning by doing it with a friend. I know busy couples who lean on each other for assistance with childcare so that they can go on date nights and get some private time.
And, as all of you know, I am a huge believer in having a career coach – someone who knows your business, has been through it all, has achieved success, and is willing to share his or her experience with you. Your coach should be somebody you can talk to, and is committed to help you achieve your goals.
"Successful living" doesn’t mean that you’ll never have to work hard or experience tough times. But, I know that having the life you want is attainable. Just remember to follow the one-two-three’s… no magic required!
Warmly,
