Two Books That Changed My Life

Share

I’ve found that one of the best questions to ask successful people is “what book changed your life?”

Because as the old saying goes, “success leaves clues.”  And if you can find out what books successful people read, you can read the same books and train your mind to follow in the same path.

Today, I’d like to share a couple of my favorite books.  I can say in all seriousness that these books changed my life.

You may not have heard of these titles before, but if you get a chance to pick these up over the holidays I strongly recommend it.

Man's Eternal Quest by Paramahansa Yogananda

Man's Eternal Quest by Paramahansa Yogananda

My all-time favorite book is “Man’s Eternal Quest” by Paramahansa Yogananda.

As you may have guessed from the name, Paramahansa Yogananda was one of the first people to introduce Westerners to teachings of meditation and Yoga.

In this book, Paramahansa explores and explains many little-known subjects such as meditation, life after death, health and healing and the unlimited powers of the human mind.

I also love the book, “The Richest Man Who Ever Lived:  King Solomon’s Secrets to Success, Wealth and Happiness.”

1665-1

The Richest Man Who Ever Lived: King Solomon's Secrets to Success, Wealth and Happiness

In fact, I like this book so much that I’ve bought a copy for every single one of my employees here at Dalbey Education.  This book details the strategies of King Solomon — a man who lived nearly three thousand years ago and created a fortune worth nearly a trillion dollars in today’s money.

Those are two of the books that changed my life.

But I want to hear from you.

Which books changed your life?  Please leave a comment and let me know.  If everyone leaves a comment suggesting just one life-changing book, we’ll have the makings of an incredible reading list.

Oh, and one more thing:  Merry Christmas!

The Book, “See You At The Top” by Zig Ziglar is a book that had a huge impact on my life. I was going through a transition in my life as an aimless undergaduate in college in 1986, and a professor required the class to read this book. The book instilled in me the desire to do more for myself, focus on the important things in life and have a positive attitude toward achieving my goals. It wasn’t a life altering experience reading the book, but it certainly had a profound impact on how I viewed life then and now. The book was what I needed at the time I read it.

I would like to say “The Secret”, but this is not true. It would have to be the BIBLE. As we know, all things are possible with God. I heard an incredible comment on an evangelistic TV show: I must accept God’s view of my circumstances, because our God is causing all my circumstances to work for my good. All I have to do is believe and trust in the Lord.

It appears I’m the first to comment on this article which is cool because I’m sure my all time favorite book has got to be on everyones list. That book of course is “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. If you have not read it, you simply must. It is THE classic book on the subject of achievement.

The second book that changed my life is a lot less known. It was distributed by Amway back in their early days to all their distributors, which I was one. The title is “How I Raised Myself From Failure to Success” by Frank Betcher, a man who’s major league baseball career was ended early due to an injury and who went on to a second career in the Insurance Industry. The secret behind the title of his book was Mr. Betcher’s discovery of the power of ENTHUSIASM.

Since this is the time of Christmas reminders, I cannot help but mention the Bible as the book that changed my life, especially the book of John. A good modern translation of that book will illustrate how my life switched directions because of its influence. BTW, King Solomon was the wisest man of his time and his wisdom is found in Old Testament books such as Proverbs and Song of Solomon.

The specific ways in which the Bible changed my life is a favorite topic of mine which I’d love to candidly share.

Thank you, Russ — for sharing your two “most favorite books” on your blog — especially during this holiday season. I am headed to the bookstore to look for them!
You got me thinking… so I went and pulled out an “old favorite” — given to me by my parents in 1961. This precious copy of “Something To Live By” (written by Dorothea Simons Kopplin in 1945) is literally “falling to pieces.” It is dog-earred and well-worn. And it has been both inspiration and comfort to me — many times in my life.
I don’t even know if this wonderful little book is still in print. First published in 1945 by Garden City Books, New York, it came out again in 19 printings, from 1945 to 1959 (over 100,000 copies) — not sure after that.
There is an interesting story behind the book. When Dorothea Kopplin was told by doctors she had only a short time to live, she decided to leave for her children — in the form of this book — her guide to building a philosophy of contentment and happiness in life.
Her purpose was to help her children — to develop a set of good values; acquire fortitude and courage; and, to gain both strength and happiness with which to live their lives — even after she would no longer be there to assist and guide them.
She went to work — gathering a collection of poems, sayings, and inspired writings that had helped her in her own life. The chapters included: what and where is happiness; here is encouragement; the purpose of sorrow and how to meet it; friendship; love; family life; life’s true values; humor; sense of proportion; the value of time; thoughts to help life run smoothly; the meaning of God; and, brotherhood.
The happy part of this story? Dorothea Kopplin survived her illness!!! Perhaps the thoughts, teachings, and inspirations that she had been gathering for her childrens’ book, just might have given her the courage and fortitude to help her to battle (and to overcome) her own illness!
This book started out as a “gift” from a dying mother — to be both guide and legacy for her children — but it just may have given her the strength and courage to fight and to overcome her illness and to save her own life!!! Great story!
Anyway, she continued working on the book for over 20 years! This book is truly a powerful work of inspiration and joy — from a mother to her children.
Though my own parents have passed on — each time I pick up this book, it still reminds me that they are always with me in spirit. I really appreciate this gift they gave me so many years ago.
    Well, happy holidays to all!
    Tina Mulligan, Bishop, Calif.

Hands down, “The Way of the Peasceful Warrior” by Dan Millman. Initially I just liked the title of the book, it sounded pretty cool, but, once I started reading it I couldn’t put it down. It was so good I finished it in three days and I’m not what you would consider “a reader”. I prefer movies. It made such an impact on my life and my perspective of life I started to purposely change who I was according to the book. It never suggested that I change, that was my choice, but it did give examples of what’s possible. Fasting. I didn’t believe it would work at first but I’m here to tell you, it works. I felt more alive, both physically and mentally, with less food in my body than I have ever felt. Initially it’s difficult but once you pass the hungers” everything just pops. One day you feel weak and useless and the next you feel light as a feather. Fasting made the world seem friendlier and happier. The seccond, third, and fourth books where good too. They all support the one before. Those books altered my direction in life completely. I would highly recommend them to anyone wanting to look for an alternative high quality way of changing their life. It completely changed my life for the better. You never know until you try. Good luck and good reading.

Second: Let’s Get Well by Adelle Davis
This book started me on living a healthy life style back in 1971, I wouldn’t recommend the book today as there is a lot of bad information in it, but it started me on reading other books about health and healthy lifestyles, something that I still do.

The Bible changed my life. No, I am not a Bible thumping Baptist or any other mainstream denomination for that matter. I was fortunate to have been given the key that unlocks the true message of the Bible early in life and have benefited from its wisdom ever since. You see, the so-called Christian religious denominations have so muddied the Bible’s message that few individuals understand what they are praying for in the most basic teaching of Christ, the Lord’s Prayer. While most view it with little regard these days it is truly relevant since it shines light on the “narrow road” ahead.

Success to many means making millions. Even the Bible says that money is for a protection. But it also says that money is a root of all sorts of injurious things. And though corporations have displaced Almighty God with a new one, GREED, it is a counterfeit deity that, by its own nature, cannot survive indefinitely.

This key I mentioned is attainable by anyone, even a child, but most reject it because of the “cost.” On the other hand, if one could see a thousand years into the future, how much would that knowledge be worth?

Two books that changed my life were, 1. George Orwell`s. “1984″. This vividly describes how oppressive and de-humanizing a society can become, and 2. Dr. Maxwell Maltz`s “Psycho-Cybernetics”. The Dr. survived the very type of opression described in “1984″, during imprisonment in a nazi concentration camp. Through learning how to cope with this terror, He developed the field of Cybernetics. His book teaches good self-hypnosis techniques and shows you how to change, (restructure), your self immage. I was smoking 2 packs of cigs a day and through using his techniques I was able to quit almost immediately with almost no anxiety or withdrawl. I read these early in life and never forgot their message. 1. How bad this can get and 2. Simple techniques to use in order to overcome almost anything in life through developing a new self immage and using goal setting to drive you forward toward your target.

    Merry Christmas Russ,

One book that changed my life is called “Against The Gods” by Peter Bernstein. It outlines the evolution of risk management and how necessary risk is to any open auction market. It provides liquidity (ease of buying and selling) and profit opportunity. Of course risk has to be calculated, but it is necessary. It’s actually not just – the bigger the risk, the bigger the reward. It’s the better the odds, the better the price, and only then, the bigger the bet = the bigger the reward and the better the return. Conservative investors need to know that their rate of return is relative to the degree of risk they assume. If return doesn’t keep pace with inflation, you actually lose money because you lose buying power. This book will change your mindset on risk assumption. It could be applied to the cash flow business in the appraisal of purchase offers, because that is when you would risk your own money.

I will say that a book that changed my life was “Seven Ways to Live Your Best Life Now” By Joel Olsten. It came to me by a stranger that i met in the post office at a very low point in my life. We are now close friends.

Although the Holy Bible (KJV)is the most important life-changing book for me spiritually, there are a couple of others that have been a tremendous influence.

First, is “Mystic Path to Cosmic Power- by Vernon Howard” which stresses the importance of being in “the moment” and not continuously lost in useless daydreaming. This, of course, requires continuous work on the “self”. And I personally am far from having arrived, by any means. Finding your “true self”, and seeing the “false self” for what it is is vital in this quest.

Another is “Think and Grow Rich- by Napoleon Hill”. This one I have only recently started.
I have read numerous success quotes from him.
In this book he discusses interviews with numerous successful people from all walks of life, and the success “gems” they shared.

However, I’m still searching for my passion in life, and effort seems snuffed out by lack of enthusiasm because of a pile of small stuff that seems larger than life. I have recently read two books whichI found to have much material to ponder over.

SHACK: This book encouraged me to concentrate on “forgiveness”, something I have found in discussions that most people have problems dealing with. Forgiveness is definitely an accomplishment that will enable one to devote more time and attention to the important things in life, and less time getting bogged down with that infamous “sack” that you carry around on your shoulder. This book has been helpful to me in many ways

THE LAST LECTURE: This is a book that I feel should be required reading for every person from age 15 to 100. It is so beautifully written and easy to read and comprehend, yet it leaves you with thoughts that you will probably retain forever.

Some words of wisdom that Randy Pausch offers are:

    1) Luck is indeed where preparation meets opportunity. (Could it be said any better!!)

    2) Complaining does not work as a strategy. We all have finite time and energy. Any time we spend whining is unlikely to help us achieve our goals, and it won’t make us happier.

    3) Experience is when you didn’t get what you wanted. Experice is often the most valuable thing you have to offer.

    4) SUCCESS: The best shortcut is the long way, which is basically two words, ‘WORK HARD’.

With those things to ponder, I am preparing for a prosperous 2010 with Russ Dalbey. There will be no more procrastination in that part of my life. I am determined, and I will succeed in these endeavors. I want to do something that is fun and profitable – and this will be my niche!!!

Man’s Search for Meaning is an excellent book portraying the sole of man when all status is strip away and everyone is on a level playing field. The book demonstrates how the goodness of man is resilient during austere and difficult times. This true story is played out in the backdrop of a Nazi Concentration Camp. How is story after story insignificant people are the ones that carry many others during these low times in the history of man? A must read.

They give you an alternate view of earth origin including the age of the earth, allowing you to speculate on everything that effects your life using a new perspective. The books start from a alternate presuppostion than do many scientists (but not all)The books are entertaining, thought provoking and push some scietific theories over the edge. It is a scientific, yet biblical perspective of earth and life origins.

The most recent book I have read that has impacted me now is “The Guernsy Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society”. It is about people living on the island of Guernsy during the German occupation in WWII, and it is a testament to how people come together and the power of love. I think it is a beautiful book.

A bit late in responding, but my most life changeing books come in two sections. When I was younger I was spiritually changed by the book, “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” by Richard Bach, a story of an entity that choses to be different in order to become better, yet not forgetting those behind that might still need help, kind of a bodhisattava thing. The other from my younger years is “On Death and Dying” by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. And expose on those who have been through near death experiences, translating to me that there is so much more to come.

The latest is anything by Ayn Rand, who proposes that we should never live for someone else, that we have to live for ourselves first. I understand this to mean that I should take care of myself first, so that I might become more competent at helping others. I have so many favorites, but another one worth mentioning is “Running from Safety” by Richard Bach. The story is one wherein the protagnoist meets his younger self and is given more self awareness through the encounter.

Later I read MAN’S ETERNAL QUEST by him and I agree w/Russ that everyone should read it! I never read the Scott/KING SOLOMON but will not rest until I find it. . . BODYMIND by Don Ethan Miller is the 1st book I would recommend. The reader is prompted in a thousand ways to awaken awareness of the power of health and nature within. The 2nd I would recommend is POOR RICHARD’S ALMANACK by Benjamin Franklin. He stresses the basics: “A Good Wife & Health, is a Man’s best Wealth.” And timeless treasures can be found such as: “Reader farewell, all Happiness attend thee, May each New-Year, better and richer find thee.”

Other favorites are Lynn Grabhorn’s EXCUSE ME, YOUR LIFE IS WAITING, Jerry and Esther Hicks’ ASK AND IT IS GIVEN, and two by Neale Donald Walsch, CONVERSATIONS WITH GOD and TOMORROW’S GOD – all of which contain the message that we are spiritual beings having a human experience and that we are far more powerful and more wonderful than we seem to be. ~’The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness’ by Stephen R. Covey
    ~’The Secret’ by Rhonda Byrne
~’The Slight Edge’ by Jeff Olson. I particularly like this one because it reads about how everyday endeavors that we do, even if they don’t seem to matter very much in the short period of time, if done consistently, reap huge benefits in the long period of time.

~Anything by Dr. Wayne Dyer…books, audio CD’s, etc. I love listening to him in the car…my “rolling university”. I am currently listening to ‘Excuses Begone’, Dr. Wayne Dyer’s most current work.

The Dream Giver by: Bruce Wilkenson; Ordinary lived in a land of familiar; everything was the same. all of a sudden he woke up to his big dream and couldn’t be the same anymore; he tried to share his big dream with a bunch of nobodies in the land of familiar but they stated “no one leaves familiar”. The Ordinary asked his dad if he ever woke up to his big dream before, and his father replied; “Son was there a feather on the window seal?” Ordinary said yes, his father replied “We’ll I woke up to my big dream one day and there was a feather on the window seal; but my feather turned to dust because I didn’t do nothing with it.”

This Book will change your life: Change Ordinary’s name to your name throughout the book and find out where you are in your journey of pursuing your big dream. I gave out over 100 of these books along with the prayer of Jabez by: Bruce Wilkenson:

    The prayer of Jabez is based on 1 Chronicles 4:9,10 Jabez was more honorable than his brothers his mother bore him in pain. Jabez name means pain but he didn’t let his name dictate who he was; in verse 10 – Jabez said to the Lord; “Oh that you would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, keep your hand upon me, keep me from evil so that I won’t cause any pain. I gave over 100 of these books out also, many multi-millionare companies have built their business on this little prayer. When Jabez asked the Lord to keep his hand upon him; he was simply saying “When I become complacent, begin to procrastinate, get lazy, in my comfort zone – push me out of my delima out of my element don’t let me get comfortable and while you are thrusting my into my destiny, keep me from evil so I won’t cause any pain; because everything that I do will affect everyone around me good bad or indifferent;

This book will keep us focused because someone is depending on us to win; what type of legacy are we going to leave for our children’s children? Will it be a legacy of poverty and negativity? or will it be a legacy of wealth, health, and prosperty. Let’s pay it forward…

P.S. I just signed up I am excited to be a part of the team so that I could leave a mark that cannot be erased; I am not able to gain access to my website. Need help…

    Thanks
