The Dirty, Filthy Four Letter Word You MUST Defeat

How to defeat fear
First – let me say that you guys (and gals) have been AWESOME!
I’m completely blown away by the number of comments you’ve been leaving on each blog post. I love reading your comments and hearing from each one of you.
Many of you chimed on my last few posts and posted comments concerning a certain “four letter word.”
F-E-A-R.
So in this blog post, let’s talk about the elephant in the room. Let’s talk about fear.
Let’s get it all out in the open. Let’s hash it out in broad daylight… and let me give you a few things I’ve learned over the years about dealing with fear.
Fear Is A School-Yard Bully
Like most bully’s, fear backs down when you stand tall and hold your ground. Too often we sell ourselves short because we’re so concerned with what MIGHT happen.
For example, in my last post a student made a comment where he listed out 7 things a note-holder MIGHT ask him. And he was worried about how to respond to those 7 questions.
Here’s the thing: It’s highly unlikely that a note-holder would ever ask this student all of those questions.
But the thought of what MIGHT happen was preventing this student from talking to note-holders. That’s fear.
Luckily, there’s a simple (but not easy) solution:
Just do it.
Just do the thing that you’re afraid of.
Even if you fail, it doesn’t matter. Because the simple act of standing up to the bully is enough. When you stand up to fear, you’ll show fear that you’re not afraid.
And when you do that — you’d be surprised how often fear magically vanishes.
Let me leave you with this.
It’s a quote from the movie “Evan Almighty” starring Steve Carell and Morgan Freeman:
“If someone prays for patience, do you think God gives them patience? Or does he give them the opportunity to be patient?
If they pray for courage, does God give them courage, or does he give them opportunities to be courageous?
If someone prayed for their family to be closer, you think God zaps them with warm, fuzzy feelings? Or does he give them opportunities to love each other?”
– from the movie Evan Almighty
So when you feel what you think is fear, perhaps what you’re really feeling is an opportunity to be courageous.
If this article helps you in any way, please leave me a comment and let me know. Also, if you have any tips for defeating fear, feel free to share those with everyone on this blog.
IMPORTANT UPDATE: Watch your email this week because I’m going to be sending you an invitation to join me and some of my most successful students at my upcoming Triple Crown Workshop.
For many of my students, getting together with other students and meeting real people who are making real money in this business was exactly what they needed to defeat fear and get started in the Cash Flow Business. So please watch your email this week and I urge you to join us at this exciting event.

Terrific work! This is the type of information that should be shared around the web. Shame on the search engines for not positioning this post higher!

For those of you that might have fear when talking to people. Get a hundred dollar bill and make several copies of it. (one side only, we are not doing wrong, just a visual refrence.)
Now put that stack of cash in front of you. Look at your list of calls to be made and understand that one of those numbers will release that money. The rest wont. So the quicker you call all the numbers the sooner you will have the cash.
April 6th, 2010 at 6:40 am
You are an inspiration to any person not just note finders. I believe you are right where God wants you to be. Even if I never find or close a note deal, not saying i wont. You are so awsome and one day i am going to met you. Fear is faith in the wrong things, but we all battle it in one way or another, me included. Thank you!
April 7th, 2010 at 5:29 pm
some are born to be zebras and some to be horses would you ride a zebra??
April 6th, 2010 at 7:57 am
As you can imagine, I have all kinds of comments from note holders, such as “I’m happy with my checks every month” or, ” who are you? where did you get my name? etc. I have found that the best way is to give the obvious answers and try to stay one jump ahead of them.
As you have said ” don’t give up”
April 6th, 2010 at 8:32 am
Russ
I agree with you a 100%. The only way you can defeat fear is by going out there and doing it. The more you do it the easier it gets. You’ll gain confidence and become at ease. The hard part is getting them to sell their note…lol
God Bless

This is one of the obstacles in my way. I am still doing my mailing of postcards, but the thought of talking with a real live person, gives me fear. So, until I actually get some noteholders to call me, from these postcards, I am practicing by myself. It doesn’t feel the same as talking with someone.
April 6th, 2010 at 9:53 am
Hey Jackie,
try practicing with a family member, a friend and see if that helps, it helped me try it.
your friendly blogger.

April 6th, 2010 at 10:17 am
Russ, thank you for these true and inspiring words. I often feel as though I’m the only one facing the issue of crippling fear… apparently not! I know deep within myself that I have every capability of excelling in this business and being one of your success stories who can inspire others, but the fear monster just nails me. These words of encouragement help to work through the process… much appreciated.
April 6th, 2010 at 11:21 am
Hello Russ,
Thank you so much for you words of encouragement. It is amazing to me that they would come to you, and through you to us, via a movie…but hey, whatever works! It is what it is! My father was a pastor and this blog reminded me of one of the things he told me about the devil. Whether you are religious or not, hopefully the concept will help, as it has helped me throughout my life. Dad said it is all about putting things in perspective. When you go to a theatre to watch a movie, the characters on the screen appear to be bigger than life; bigger than any person or creature actually is. However, if you go to the projection room and look at the film, you find that it is only 8mm film. So when things appear to be bigger than life, just put them in perspective and they are not so scary after all! Just thought I’d share! Thanks!

Fear can be overcome yea their will be those who don’t want your service but the ones who do are very grateful. besides the worst they can do is hang up.
April 6th, 2010 at 12:58 pm
Hi Russ,Fear is not my problem but what you had
to say about it was very good and very true.
Every tip you help us with is much appreciated.
Thanks and keep the tips coming. Jacquie
April 6th, 2010 at 5:26 pm
Russ,
I always looked at fear as something I had to overcome.
What words of wisdom, it is an “opportunity” to be strong and courageous. I should have paid more attention to the lion in the Wizard of Oz!
April 6th, 2010 at 7:43 pm
Hi Russ,
I’m still doing my postcards and business cards, and still using the neigborhood paper that is free on Friday. Had not talk to nobody yet but, work on it. My fear is all gone just work on get my first note deal.
April 6th, 2010 at 8:00 pm
Hey Russ…thankyou for your enduring spirit!!!
Getting older…a person tends to grow a wee bit more paranoid
and it chaps your butt….as you put it “FEAR”! Keep rattling me and I do believe I am gaining some wallop…YEA!!!!!!
April 6th, 2010 at 10:31 pm
Thats what I talk about, I get encouragement and encoragement to others those are really positive thoughs to help people to get up and walk without FEAR!
THANX!
April 6th, 2010 at 11:44 pm
and the question is who gives us the spirit of fear. I was reading the Daily Bread on yesterday and it was taking from Hebrews 13:5 Jesus said I will never leave you or forsake you. The title of yesterday’s word “AND FOR THIS I HAVE JESUS”.
Thank you for that powerful message because I haven’t even started yet. Unfortunately I can’t attend the workshop, because I am very ill. But, I need help and prayer.
Thank you for your LOVE and ENCOURAGEMENT. My Pastor stated instead of telling my GOD about my problems, tell my problems about “MY GOD”.
Thanks again and the word for ‘2010′ is:
F – ForEver
R – Rely

Russ, Love this blog.
Thought I was the only weakneed one in the crowd.
Have been “looking” at the note busines for over two years and have done nothng except going to the courthouse, which turned out to be a real loser.
Will try harder.
April 7th, 2010 at 3:37 am
Hi Jim:
Nope, you’re not the only one who gets weak knees sometimes. We all feel fear sometimes. But to be successful in this business (or in life, really), you must NOT let fear prevent you from taking action and moving in the right direction.
April 7th, 2010 at 11:47 am
Hey Jim,
There are no losers that’s what Russ says, only winners in this business. I have’nt closed a note deal yet either but I’m close, so pull yourself together and keep it MOVIN.
April 14th, 2010 at 11:33 am
An acromyn for fear :false evidence appearing real.
April 7th, 2010 at 6:29 am
This is very well put together. To me “FEAR” is the most scariest and once you can get past it it’s a winner – If you make a mistake, pick yourself up and keep on going – a person learns by mistakes you don’t give up whatsoever – keep on going. I have been in this for a year and still have not completed one note, but I’m still not going to give up you cannot let “fear” defeat you, if you do – you will never get what you want and live is too short for that. I admire you very much Russ, you have come a long way in your life and I’m hoping that I can do the same for the amount of time I have left. You are very inspiring and very honest in what you do – Keep up the great work and take care of that beautiful family of yours. Again thank you for all you do.
April 7th, 2010 at 8:45 am
Wow!! Elisabeth, You are so Honest to say to everyone that you been in the note business for that long and you have not yet completed one note deal. God bless you for being honest, your words has encourage me. This is my prayer for all of us: For I am the Lord thy God who takes hold of your Right Hand and Says to You, Do Not Fear, I will Help you. Isa. 41:13 It helps and keeps me going against myself. Believe it. Jayne.
April 13th, 2010 at 5:02 pm
Thank you for the encouragement Russ. To be honest that is my only one excuse. So far I got my court leads, printed some postcards, yet I could not have the courage to mail them just because of fear of being asked so many questions that I may not know the answers to. But I will do it, I don’t think it will kill me just to try.
April 7th, 2010 at 8:46 am
Absolutely right Swan — it won’t kill you to try. Mail those postcards out immediately and let us know what happens!
April 7th, 2010 at 11:48 am
Thanks, Russ for the words of wisdom for those hanging on with some fear in them. You certainly said it like a double-edged-sword piercing through the heart of fear itself. I’m reminded of someone who said: “Success is a product of many failures.” Fear? Forget it, just do your thing for when you make mistakes and fall, rise up even if you have to do it several times over. It proves you are still human. Only God can’t make mistakes, eh!
April 7th, 2010 at 8:47 am
Dear Russ,
It is always a blessing to hear from you.
I will keep this for the rest of my Life.
Faida
April 7th, 2010 at 9:11 am
Well, that’s true about God. God cannot just had out to you your character. If he did we would all be like pupets. Free will is what he gave us, and making the appropriate decision will strenthen our character.

Hi Russ,
This is so true. And, I have allowed fear to help me procrastinate when I know I have to perform the cold calling phase of my marketing campaign. I did just fine with it in Boot Camp. So, what is so different??? I just want you to know… today’s blog is exactly what I needed. I start the cold calls today.
Thanks,
Kris
April 7th, 2010 at 10:22 am
Fear comes from within and has to be put in context. What is it that one is afraid of? Once this is discovered then it can be overcome.
April 7th, 2010 at 12:53 pm
Fear is not the issue, generating enough interested people to call is key.
April 7th, 2010 at 2:17 pm
Hello Russ and all other viewers. I bought this course over 2 years ago. I recently called in to register with the company. I am going thru being scared to actually make that first move/contact with a noteholder. Why? I don’t know. After reading the email that you sent me I feel like I am ready to conquer that bully. I have to get started quick so that I can attend the Triple Crown Workshop in May. If I don’t I will not have the funds to do so. Thanks for your help.

TODAY I WAS READING THE BLOG ON FEAR AND I SEE I AM NOT ALONE.
April 7th, 2010 at 3:13 pm
Hi Russ: I bought the program some time ago, and due to illness, personal and hubby, I just wasn’t able to get things rolling. Thank goodness things are starting to straighten out a bit and I hope to get rolling within the next couple of weeks. I found your article very inspiring and will keep reading them for encouragement and suggestions. Thanks again, and I am looking forward to “getting” the notes.
April 7th, 2010 at 5:18 pm
Dear Russ:
Thank you so much for sharing your inspirational wisdom. I also like what I learned many years back: “You have nothing to fear, except Fear itself”. In other words; Fear can be crippling & it is the opposite of Faith & you can’t have both Faith & Fear. I choose Faith! PTL!
Thank you.
Have a very blessed & successful day!

Hello Russ,
I am one of you new students and I really enjoy your words of encouragement. I am really excited about this business and when you keep sending inspirational messages it keeps me encouraged. Fear is the school yard bully but that fear is what blocks us from our blessing if we don’t try to overcome it.
Keep up the good work

F.E.A.R.-False Evidence Appearing Real. Turning fear into an acronym is the best way I’ve learned to define its true meaning and to continue success in my line of work inspite of its presents. Courage is not the absents of fear. Courage is the actions takin inspite of it! Thanks for all your inspiration Russ and God Bless.

Fear will hold you back from being the person you want to be. On Wed, I walk into a C.P.A. office because when I called he said I could drop off my bussness card and other marketing resoures I made for this bussness. He looked like a bear, at first I had butterflys, then I just stood tall and said good morning, and drop off thw papers and smile at him. I felt good because this is the first for me to promote my bussness in person. I thought about it after that this C.P.A. was having a dificult day and somtimes the first inpression will scare you. I will make another call to him again.
April 8th, 2010 at 5:36 am
God did not give us a spirit of fear (timidity), but a spirit of power(dynaminte)of love and of self-discipline.

Thanks again, Russ, for your encouragement! I’ve let fear and procrastination bully me too long!! Time to charge the giant!!
In response to the lady who asked if anyone would ride a zebra—Yes I would. What an awesome way to stand out in a crowd!!

Fear of the unknown is always with us in any endeavor we start. The only way to overcome it is to DO IT. It’s surprising how easy it becomes once we start.
April 8th, 2010 at 8:56 am
Russ, You are right. So many people pray for their life to be better or even easier, When the oppurtunity presents itself to make that happen, they freeze or panic because they are afraid of change or the unknown. I know it has happened to me in my life. Thanks to you I am now starting to take on a new mindset. It has made different areas in my life more peacefull. Thank You.
April 8th, 2010 at 8:58 am
Hello Mary,
I agree with you, this could be the answer to our prays, nothing beats a failure but a try.

FEAR! Fear is like a dog chasing you. The you run the more it chase. Turn back and face fear like you face the dog. The dog will (like fear) will hesitate and retreat because your not afeard anymore.

Hey Russ,
you always have a word of encouragement for all of your student’s. My business is all set-up, postcards are sended out and over a 75 calls had been made. My problem is calling back when I get the answer machine, that’s when FEAR hits me so I don’t, if they don’t call me back I won’t call them. After reading the comments, and that quote from the movie. My quote “who cares if the horse is blind, just load the wagon.
We have to keep it movin.
Thank you Russ, and my fellow bloggers.
April 8th, 2010 at 1:36 pm
I Love your quote about the horse and wagon, Very True!
April 13th, 2010 at 8:23 am
i am sending out post cards now waiting to for that moment when i can do my first deal and make some real money.
April 8th, 2010 at 2:32 pm
Those words are motivating,Im just getting started in this business and fear have been pulling my coat tail for the last 2 months. I refuse to let fear run my life Thanks for the encouraging words Russ I needed that
April 8th, 2010 at 2:34 pm
Fear has certainly held me back. To pick up the phone and make those calls to the 1000’s of post cards, newsletters, and fliers I have sent out, has been my stumbling block. I know that the phone call and speaking with the people will get me farther. The Note Holders have not been calling as I have hoped.
If it is God’s Will this business is going to work for me and like my one goal states, I will be one of Russ’s Top Notefinders in December.

April 8th, 2010 at 2:53 pm
My fear was not having all the answers. However, I took th ebull by the horn and started mailing post cards. I was surprise to get a few calls, 2 of which I know are very interested, but because I was so completed thrown off, I did not get to do the deal. I have not given up, I still intend to pursue the two people and also I got that fear out of the way. I tyed up a few question I might ask to help me along the way. I am no longer afraid of what they may ask. If they want they will say yes. Just get the NOS out of the way.
April 8th, 2010 at 3:05 pm
Hi Russ,
Thanks so much for the emails that you send. They are always so encouraging. So why am I still not starting the business, I guess fear of failing. My daughter (18) has even told me that she is going to the Post Office herself to get me the post cards so that together we can start this business. Is she trying to tell me something. I think it’s time to confront my fears. Thanks for all you do!!!!!
April 8th, 2010 at 3:40 pm
Be thankfull that your daughter is taking an interest. My 21 year old son won’t even take a second look at this, because it involves doing a little work and takes up his valuable time away from his “friends” Take your encouragement from her. You can do this.
April 13th, 2010 at 8:27 am
I’ve always had the fear of calling people I don’t know about doing business. Now it doesn’t
bother me. I’ve been told by my 13 year old son,
“Mom, what do you care what they think about you?” and you know what? that’s exactly what I think when I have to do something like calling someone- I think, ” I don’t care!” and then it’s easy to do.
Thanks Russ for all your inspiration!

Russ
GreatInfo about Fear! Replied to a Lady that illness had stopped her from being able to do anything at this time. I let her know she wasn’t alone,& she would be in our prayers tonight. The phone rang, & it was a return call from one of the 100’s Iv’e made. Something may be in the works now for my first deal! Maybe caring for someone other then yourself, with a prayer, has helped? God Willing. Fere, Faer, Frea, Aerf, I guess if you can’tspell it you don’t have it. God bless Russ, Have a great evening!

F.E.A.R. = Fantasized Experiences Appearing Real
April 9th, 2010 at 12:13 pm
I’ve had the program for what will be a year this coming August, I’ve ordered the newsletter program and even had 1000 prints made, I’ve compiled a list of Realtors in my area, and thats as far as I’ve gotten, my friends and family think I was stupid to buy the program and think it a farce, so all my hopes have been shattered by a lack of support. So FEAR is definitely the key word playing in my mind. What happens when I finally decide to send them, what do i say to them when I answer the phone. I’m definitely scared to take the next step which is very strange considering my personality, I guess my biggest fear is if it seems to good to be true is normally is. Where do I go from here?
April 9th, 2010 at 5:31 pm
Mina Kaye, My family is also skeptic, I am doing one day at a time with the future in mind. If you have anyone that is positive in your life, spend your time with them. I have visions of being confident while talking to people. I am not a people person,You have to tell yourself, that they are no better than you. Your service is as valuable as theirs. Just Visualize What You Want. Hope this helps. Mary
April 13th, 2010 at 8:38 am
To Mina, Do not fear!! Do not think fear!! Just drink a little water and put it by your side on the table-top while you are on the phone with your clientele. It will calm you down cause thats how I do it. Be yourself, breathe in and out and when its all-over you’ll find you are still breathing with a possibility of a Note. Because mailing to Realtors will definitely and surely get your phone-ringing. And, if nothing else works then pray my favorite prayer for this bussiness, because its what works for me. This is where you’ll find it in the Bible: Isa.41:13. PS: You are not alone when you don’t have family support. I’m alone too, but not really, I have God inside me and beside me and you should too.
Go for it!! Sincerely Jayne.

I don’t know if this will help anyone or not, but someone once said (I forget who it was)that it helps them to picture a person who causes them fear as being in their underwear. lol When someone says something like that, just remembering what they said makes you laugh, and any fear that you have goes out the window!

Thank you Russ. I appreciate your Blog about the school yard bully…Fear. Your inspirations and sharing with others helps me and gives me more strength to overcome as well.
Thank you for the opportunity of letting me learn more and share too. Sincerely Jayne.

Hey Jayne,
I just got over the hump with my call backs, now you said the Banks and Realtors will get the phones ringing, now that HOT!! Would I have to do a presentation? If I do, that would be three humps I would have to overcome (speaking in front of people). If not, the money is in the bank. Thanks so much!!!!

Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorius triumphs, even though checkered by failure… than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.

Hi Russ,
You are so right! According to Richard Bach, “You are never given a dream without the power to make it come true.” I say I will keep on persevering.

To Jayne, I was inspired by your blog to Mina. I will find the money to get my newsletter printed. I have not done a deal yet but I have sent out postcards. I would love some pointers.

To Mina, I read your blog and I have not got a deal either. I have only been in the business for a little over a month. I sent out postcards from my courthouse quarries last week and am waiting. I too have the newsletter but you have printed yours, I have not. Why not send a few out on your list the worse they could say is no? Like Russ said, use the script in the books for the telephone conversation. As soon as I get the funds I am going to get my newsletter printed. By the way, I believe this is real. I know a friend of a friend who started this about 6 months ago and is making good money. I have been trying to get my friend to let me talk to him. Hang in there and God Bless! Elsie,
Really you know someone that has been successful. We just got the program including spending money on the marketing package. Very nervous that we just threw money away. It is exciting to hear someone is successful

I HAVE ANOTHER FOUR LETTER WORD FOR YOU. LAZY.
SOMETIMES IT ISN’T FEAR THAT STOPS PEOPLE–IT IS PLAIN OLD FASHIONED LAZINESS. THEY WANT THIS. THEY WANT TO SUCCEED, BUT THEY ARE TOO LAZY TO PUT FOR THE EFFORT THAT IT TAKES. I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT ANY OF YOU THAT ARE GOING TO READ THIS, JUST PEOPLE (SOMETIMES LIKE ME) WHO ARE JUST TOO TIRED OR LAZY TO GET OFF THEIR DUFFS AND DO IT. I AM CHANGING, THOUGH. IT IS AN EFFORT, BUT IT IS HAPPENING. THANKS FOR LETTING ME GET THIS OFF MY CHEST. THIS IS AIMED MOSTLY AT MYSELF, BUT IF YOU RECOGNIZE YOURSELF HERE, YOU MUST DO IT ANYWAY IF YOU WANT TO NOT BE BROKE ALL OF THE TIME. GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF US LAZY PEOPLE!!
