Wimbledon’s Weary Warriors: An unusual lesson in success

A lesson in tenacity from a tennis match
I’m not the world’s biggest tennis fan, but there was a recent match that made worldwide headlines and FORCED me to sit up and take notice.
As you might have guessed, I’m talking about the longest tennis match in history — which took place just a few days ago.
Two evenly-matched athletes went head-to-head and battled tooth and nail… neither man willing to give an inch or accept defeat.
When the dust finally settled… John Isner defeated Nicholas Mahut 70-68 in a match that lasted 11 hours and five minutes, spread out over 3 days.
The lesson I learned? Sometimes the key to success is simply a matter of wanting it MORE than the other guy.
Take this record-setting tennis match, for example. I think it’s safe to say that these two men were about as evenly-match as you could hope for. I’m sure they both saw their share of lucky bounces and bad breaks during the 11-hour match.
But one man wanted to win just a little bit more. One man held out just a little bit longer. And at the end of the day, success showed herself to the man who wanted her more.
Here’s What This Record-Setting Tennis Match Has To Do With YOU And The Cash Flow Business…
If you’re a long-time blog reader, I’m sure you’ve heard me tell the story of man who came within 3 feet of a fortune.
As the story goes, way back in the 1800’s during the great California gold rush, a man set out west to search for gold and find his fortune. As luck would have it, one day this man was panning in a river bed when he discovered a few small gold flakes.
Quickly and quietly, he marked his spot and snuck off to secure the high-powered drilling equipment he’d need to extract his underground fortune.
When he returned and started drilling, everything went according to plan. The drills went down, the gold came up and the man had dollars signs in his eyes. But then something unusual happened.
Without warning, the gold vein seemingly dried up. So the man moved the drill around, testing different spots, hoping to pick up the underground gold vein again.
But it was no use.
Finally, the man abandoned the site, sold the drilling equipment to a “junk man” and returned home with his hat in his hand. However, that’s not where the story ends.
Because the “junk man” called in a mining engineer, who pointed out the first prospector quit drilling a mere 3 feet from a million dollar underground gold vein.
The lesson is simple: Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up. Because right at this very minute, you could be closer to success than you can possibly imagine.
Now it’s your turn: What did you learn this week about overcoming adversity and “sticking with it?” Please share your stories in the comments.
– Russ
Founder of Winning in the Cash Flow Business

I guess the basic lesson to learn here comes also from another great philosopher. After done all to stand, Stand therefore,…there are going to be bumps, bruises and even some type of fear that will keep you from doing so,….if you have patience, you will have perseverance, and with perseverance, comes victory.

Never give up no matter how discouraged you get. Take a break, walk away for a little bit and go back at it again.

I have been really frustrated these past weeks, and the thought had occurred to me. However, I am still searching for Gold. Comprising names is really time consuming, and since I have over a thousand, and that is just from Yellowpages.com, and that is mostly lawyers. The frustration came in, when I had to look for zip codes, which when searching for the zip code, it gave me more names to work with, which is a blessing, and now becomes workable, if ever the names stop popping up. However I refuse to give up. My day is very much near.

I’m in the Protege program and I watched the 1st video that is strongly suggested. I watched it every day and sometimes twice a day for an entire month. Then I remembered I had a cd on The Law of Attraction (which is discussed in Russ’ video). I listened to the cd that I have and it is exactly what Russ is expressing. Then for some reason, I discovered a book by Nepoleon Hill, not his ‘Think and Grow Rich’, I have that as well and the book I have goes into great detail how we all can achieve our desires and one major thing Mr. Hill says is to have a “chief aim” and stick to it like a bull dog grabs onto something and doesn’t let go.
June 28th, 2010 at 9:33 pm
I learned that if I don’t stay focused and just do it–it isn’t going to get done. NO ONE IS GOING TO DO IT FOR ME!!
June 28th, 2010 at 9:59 pm
Hello Mr. Dalbey, I heard about that match. Sometimes it’s not the size of the dog, it’s the size of the fight in the dog. A man is commended according to his wisdom. Adversity is only a trial, if you know what’s on the other side why would you quit.
June 28th, 2010 at 10:03 pm
I haven’t necessarily ‘hit the gold mine’ yet, but I do know the value of persistence and feel that I am just a hair short of total success. I’ve been struggling to find Notes in my area, Oregon; there just aren’t that many! I physically looked up the records in the county courthouse in my location today and saw that less than one page of trust deeds on the computer were originated by an individual, over the last 20 years! Pretty disheartening considering I’ve been doing this over a year and have yet to find a note deal that got picked up on the network. But am I going to quit? No! Not now, not right before I find the note deal I deserve, the one that has been waiting for me to do my due diligence and be persistent enough draw it all the way to me. I am now working with home owners to CREATE notes so that I can structure them properly and ensure they are marketable on the network and will get snatched up instantly. Many people are struggling to sell their homes, and some of them are against seller financing for various reasons (or are so far in negative equity that it just isn’t feasible). If we want to make it in this business, we must EDUCATE these homeowners on what seller financing is and why it works, especially in an economy like we have today, where the hardest hit sector is the housing market. I am not going to give up and I know that success is right around the corner. Money is attracted to speed, so I am going to get moving, do my daily rituals and exercising, and go after the gold nuggets that are surely waiting for me just under the surface. The key here is persistence, and I plan on opening the door with it NOW!

Russ, Thanks for the peptalk, Always helps to have kick in the keister once and a while.

My lesson in overcoming this week is: I need to put my trust in the Lord. Do what I can do and leave the rest to Him. He is faithful.

Yes this is so true the more you want it the harder you will work. Peparing your self for the dynamics of response. the more you work and prepare your self. The better your chances are.I guess this is why it is good to listen to everyone story because it prepares you for rejection. Along with testing becomes achievement and no matter how long it takes to get it hangin there. Never give up.
June 28th, 2010 at 11:22 pm
Russ, you’re right. I also watched part of the match and also listened to its developments on National Public Radio. I was amazed at the persistence of both men and their unbending determination.
As you rightly pointed out on your blog, one man wanted to win a little more, while the other wanted to last a little longer. The levels of determination differed somehow. The one who was more determined, prevailed over the one who just wanted to hold on a little longer.
I also have a story, something I witnessed from an illiterate 45 year-old man with developmental disabilities and wheelchair. He likes to spend time on the computer. He likes to visit certain websites, but he doesn’t know how to read or write. So, he just clicks on anything he sees on the computer screen with a hope that he’ll get what he’s looking for.
For the past month, our Network Manager has unsuccessfully tried to help me by phone to help this guy setup wireless internet connection from the main computer to his computer in his bedroom. The instructions I received did not help me get the internet wirelessly connected to his computer. I summoned my son – who has more knowledge about networks than I. He also could not get the computer wirelessly connected.
Frustrated, this guy kept on trying for one week. He kept on clicking here and there, sometimes deleting things unintentionally and unknowingly.
Finally, yesterday morning he called me and said, “Henry, come here. I want to show you something.” I went into his room. To my amazement, he was surfing the internet. He said to me ‘I’ve connected it. I’m wireless now. His face beamed with excitement. This shows that persistence and a little more determination to succeed helps a lot. That quest for wanting a little more success is magical.

Russ,
Great story with a great lesson. I posted a Note on my web page. How long does it usually take for a buyer on that note? Can I check and see if anyone has looked at it? Questions asked buy seller……… Told him I would try to find out some info for him.

I have read the story about the vein of gold before and it is very inspiring. I know that you never give up on anything worthwhile. I am just trying to find someone who wants to get rid of a note. I would like to get more examples of what exactly I am looking for in the court house records once I get that down I will be off to the races. Thankyou Russ of

I met a girl a year and a half ago. She like dancing with at public place once a week. after about 6 months of seeing her there and dancing I ask if I could walk her to her car after the dance. She gave me a quick reply…….NO. She said I just come her to dance. Weeks went by I asked again, still NO. She finally ok, but remember I’m not interested in you. After a few mmonths went by I asked if she would like to go to the city and see the sights. She said ok but it’s not a date. Months later we were dating and and another 6 months went by. I asked her to marry me she flatly refused and a couple of days later she broke up with me.
But did I give up, NO! Presently she is my steady girl and we now talk about marriage together

I don’t want to give up. In fact I am still looking for a mine in other words prospecting. Only whatever I do my hearing fails me even with a good hearing aid. I could hardly undersand phone conversations. I am looking for some work that all instructions shall be by emails and have to contact my clients by emails too. I am even afraid to chat face to face with friends and that is my biggest problem. Most of my communication is in writing. This is why until now I have been reading your interesting and fruitful emails.

The tennis match is hard hitting example of a determined “tanacity of purpose” in action.
You are right about who wanted it the most. One is the winner of the match, but in reality, they were both winners, because both gave it their all.
It is a good lesson to practice in life—especially ME.

I’ve learned to keep going because that first deal is right around the corner and you have got to want it more than the other person.

To never give up and go for your dreams. If you give up on something you know some else will be right behind you to scoop it up. Had a hopeful thing happen last week had someone call on one of my postcards. My heart was raising only to find out I had mixed up to of the numbers in the address. This person was selling there house but didn’t have a note.I told them if they decided to sell seller financing to give me a call.So see not always a bad thing please keep me in mind. Keep the messages coming. Sincerely Dawn

I am a firm believer in fate and luck and although I had no luck finding notes I am still determined to succeed. I am overworked an under paid so I started this system some years ago and I have little to no time to try and find notes so if anyone have any suggestion on how I can better find notes please let me know of them.

Mr.Dolbey,
Hi this is Bettye I have no intentions of giving up and don’t give up on me, because I want it and I will get it.

Isn’t that like a lot of thing in our lives Most people give up before the see it.My great grandmother didn’t see her dream but her faith made it happen even after she passed on.My grandfather didn’t have to go war over sea.If you believe all things are possiable.A seed doesn’t show right away when planned but if we don’t plant we don’t get the food.

You are absolutely right success is all about perseverance.
Remember the children story book story of the great race between the rabbit and the turtle. the turtle won by staying with it until he reached the finish line. Sometimes we adults need to remember some simple truths we learned as children.
June 29th, 2010 at 8:46 am
many time we are scared and don’t do what that small voice tells us to do. What I have been thinking about is when we are scared but that other voice says every thing will be alright is to do it scared. Now there are times when we are scared but there is no peace. Don’t do it, but if it makes sense do it scared.
June 29th, 2010 at 9:01 am
Dear Russ,
My “adversity” is the needs of my children and loved ones around me. Each day I have to swim upstream past the obstacles that they lay before me to get to the “vein” where I’m drilling…the strategic mailing of my “Newsletter” and NGPG practice! Soon to hit the “mother load” by the way!!!
While frustrated at times with these precious obstacles…I’m reminded of a promise from above! SEEK YE FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD, AND ALL ELSE SHALL BE ADDED UNTO YOU!
June 29th, 2010 at 9:09 am
It seems unbelievable but these things happen for one reason or another, but hopefully with your help that did not happen to me that I am putting a lot of interest in this except that maybe a little slow but sure without going back and most importantly safely.
Thanks Russ.

This e-mail is what I need — I’ve had some really bad times lately and have no motivation, been depressed, and just haven’t done anything lately–my Mom passed a year ago, my Dad passed in February, the IRS seems to think I owe them $92,000,and I,m fighting a probate–after reading this e-mail I realizeed that I have to stop just sitting here sulking and do something positive–I read all your blogs but I don’t always check my e-mails daily so usually I’m late on your dead lines- so thanks for showing me the light–Alan

Hello Russ, The story is great! I am all in. There are alot of nay sayers out there, but if you have the drive and determination of being successful, and dont let anyone deter you, you will have success! Thanks for everything.

I have never been one to give up, I do not know why it is so hard for me to get started in this cash flow business. I do not seem to have self confidence although I know it will work and I will get it . I just need to get started, and I know I will succeed. Bobbi

Hey Russ, I really enjoyed your comparison to
the tennis match to never giving up and wanting
it more than the other guy. I am waiting on my
Protege’ package to come any day now, and am
getting really excited! However, from most of the
comments on this blog, it looks like even with the
extra help as a Protege’, it is still very difficult to
find people that want to sell their notes! I hope that
your associates and coaches will be able to help me
along! I just can’t wait to make that first deal! I feel like
once I do that, I will gain the confidence and knowledge
I need to one day quit my job as a police officer and
do this full time!
June 29th, 2010 at 11:54 am
Hi Russ
I too was amazed at the tenacity of both tennis players and it has inspired me to try even harder to be successful in the cash flow business.
June 29th, 2010 at 12:23 pm
Thanks, Russ! A little inspiration can go a long way! I’ve often thought of the comparison to panning for gold when searching out notes on the website. If anything, “Persistence” is my middle name–hopefully, soon my other middle name will be “Accomplished.” I’m a full-time worker and sole provider in my family, with very little spare time–but I spend at LEAST one-half hour a day searching for notes. I keep the county I’m researching on stand-by on my computer so it’s fast and easy to go to at any time. I’m sending postcards/letters every 6 weeks as recommended in the program, and when they have been contacted often enough my name will be familiar–then my phone contact won’t be so much of a cold call. I’ll just keep plugging away at it!
June 29th, 2010 at 3:48 pm
Russ,
Great game and story! Here’s another: Erik Weihenmeyer, the ONLY blind climber to have stood on top of Mount Everest!!!
And some of us think we have challenges…
June 29th, 2010 at 4:44 pm
Dear Russ,
I believe the tenacity to win started with his training. The coach working with him day after day speaking to him ,you can do this, you are a winner, building him up, having him to say the words out loud for encourgement. That he began to believe (I am a winner). His focous was on nothing but winning. Now it’s my turn to be the athlete.I here my coach saying you have what it takes now lets start training to be the winner I know you are.Thank you for being a (company) of people that really does care.If this man Cory had not called me I would still be standing back.I felt like I was been pushed, and pushed to go the next level. Then it happened a leap of faith arose and it was like someone jumping into water that couldn’t swim. But knew they would survive.
June 29th, 2010 at 7:48 pm
Thanks Russ,
I am sending out postcards and in 6 to 8 weeks I will send them out again and after that again remember the titans never give up!!!
June 29th, 2010 at 8:44 pm
I really enjoyed the story of the tennis match that made history. Also the gold mine 3 feet from his goal only to give up.Very inspireing to know that many of us are right there too.We just have to keep on keep,n on and never give up.I like the way the old coach Jimmy V.said, when he gave his last speach after being diegnosed with cancer.Don’t give up never give up.That’s where I am and so all of us IT’S NOT IF I’M GOING TO SELL A NOTE IT’S WHEN.It’s just a matter of time and I’m not in a hurry.Maybe just a little but NEVER,EVER,NEVER,EVER GOING to give up!!Matt 6:33
June 29th, 2010 at 8:47 pm
Good luck to all of us…Never give up Never , keep your goals in focus…C all of you on the other side.

Life is what happens while we are making plans. It’s not so much what happens in life that matters though, but what you think about what happens. It’s been a rough couple of years but, I must say that I have gotten up as many times as I have been knocked down! Thanks for the words of encouragement.Looking forward to soon joining the team. Thanks for not giving up on me. God bless you all!
June 29th, 2010 at 11:08 pm
Thanks for the encouraging story! To succeed, we must not let discouraging signs pervade.
June 29th, 2010 at 11:25 pm
Don’t give up;go the distance. No matter how hard it could be you have to want it more than the next guy!Even if you have the right tools to “dig” with, you still need the guidance from the right people to “map out” the way.
June 30th, 2010 at 1:53 am
As with anything or business endeavor that any of us take the pleasure of putting our hands to; one must indeed do it with all of his/her might. I am going to enjoy becoming affiliated with your program, Mr. Dalby…all of my previous work experience spells sure enough success for me in this endeavor. Besides, I have an “ace in the hole”. No pain; no gain. This woman is very much accustomed to working hard for her money, and having jealous and envious co-workers has proven to be a major set-back for me on all of my previous job sites. Therefore the type of working environment offered here is ideal for me-work at my own pace w/out those green eyes watching over me, causing dissension in the workplace, and reporting falsities to the management/supervisors.

Hi Russ,
Love to read the upbeat attitudes of he students, as most feel their on the edge, but could we see a few success stories.

June 30th, 2010 at 8:14 am
Thank you Russ!
I imagine that the two players have gone through years of training, blood, sweat and tears, and many victories to get to this special match. My hat is off to them. Like them, I see myself with the trophy in my hands, it may be a long road but I have the world at my feet and I will keep on going.
June 30th, 2010 at 12:31 pm
I just felt like that the other day, giving up. Since I read this I know that the harder I work great results will come and my cash flow notes will come to me!
June 30th, 2010 at 2:01 pm
Thanks RUSS
I remembered the 7th game of the NBA finals this year when Kobe Bryant had a horrible shooting night. They ask Kobe what happend? He said he wanted it so bad that he saw it slipping away.Wanting creates a feeling that you dont have something and that is negative. We should see our self haveing the notes and the money. With this type of positive energy we attract to us what we visualized that we already have. want= lack / haveing = positive
June 30th, 2010 at 4:45 pm
I know that what is perceived as hard may very well be that. But I also know that when I am getting down thinking that this business is more difficult than I thought, here you come Russ with another great example of what persistence is and what I need to do to keep moving forward!! Thank you!
June 30th, 2010 at 6:38 pm
I will never give up and I’m trusting the Lord to take me in this business where He wants me to go. I got a phone call Saturday about a man maybe interested in posting a note or two. He went out of town so will call back. I got another call today from a man in Florida. These are responses to post cards sent out . If nothing comes of them, at least I have built my confidence that I can explain what I do and how it can help them.No I will never give up who knows what tomorrow will bring. Praise God!
June 30th, 2010 at 7:36 pm
I am still trying but in the state of Alabama, its hard to find notes. If I search other states I will have to find out the laws before I can do anything. I do understand that don’t give up, keep on trying until you succeed.
June 30th, 2010 at 11:13 pm
I have learned that if you grit your teeth and bear it,that anything negative seems to work out in the end. This country would not be here if people just gave up.
July 1st, 2010 at 8:30 am
Hi Russ, thanks for sending me this blog as I am
sorry for not replying right away. But yeah all
is so true, the lesson speaks for it self never give up when things get ruff. there is a scripture in the bible that I can relate to Paul says it this way, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Simply put God has given everyone of us a calling to fulfil and if we press toward it God will help us to fulfil it and give us great victory! Thank Russ I’am pushing toward my victory every day in Christ Jesus this is what keeps me going. I will get my first Note completed.
July 1st, 2010 at 10:03 am
Hi Russ,
I learned no matter what it looks like, I will press through. I know that things can change in an instant. So I am expecting for it to do just that when I least expect it. I will be operating in my breakthrough for my business.
Thank you Russ for all of your encouragement. Be Blessed in all that you do.
Sincerely,
Linda

Russ,
I have had four deals totally fall through, but everytime it happened, I thought about the lady that was up on stage with the ones who have made it, she had nine fall through before her first one worked out. Well, I’m only up to four. I also believe that it is true, that you can’t fail, unless you give up! I don’t know when, but I know that one day I will have a deal go through. Matter of fact, I’ll have more than one deal sooner or later; it’s just a matter of time.

This Blog has really opened my eyes. I’m impressed by the spirit of all these people who try and try to achieve success in the note finding business, in spite of the fact that the real struggle seems to be not only in selling a note, but in actually finding a note to sell. Russ is to be commended for his efforts to inspire and encourage students to never give up. Some internet sites seem to me to be just like a black mailer. They get you to send money, then don’t give you what you need and want, just more and more money. Or a car dealer who sells you a car. Then says “Oh, you want to actually drive it? Then you need to buy some tires!
Russ has convinced me that there really is money to be made in the note finding business.

Hi Russ,
Just to let you know I have been putting in a couple of hours every other day learning the cash flow business from the books and DVD’s I have. Now I think I have read the books about 5 times and I have listened to the all the DVD’s some twice. I have been looked at the county recorders website, looked through several newspapers and got names off ebay and ebay classified. I am going to start with direct mail with the names I have, and than get myself a nice list built.
Enjoying the challenge in this, Thanks

Hi Shelley, I would suggest you read your books over and over again until you understand it completely. It would be nice if you could check Russ’s Blog: “Can Money Buy Happiness?” and See comment#33 where, Jayne says. It so interesting and it might help you as it does me. Thanks Shelley. Sincerely Jayne.

Tennis greats John Isner and Nicholas Mahet both ended up winners, both were a power house in the game. Possibly Karma entered in, only the individual knows.
